Design Philosophy
Three guiding principles inform our design work:

I. Architecture Inspires and Enriches.
What we build is a reflection of who we are and what we value.  In addition to meeting functional requirements; our best buildings appeal to all of our senses. They may be uplifting, captivating, and even awe-inspiring. Powerful, memorable, supportive, and high-performing spaces inspire better health, improved attitudes, and increase productivity. Dixon has a consistent record of crafting places where people can step out of the mundane and connect with their environment in ways that enrich—all of this working within our clients’ real-world time and budget constraints.

II. Architecture is Both Art and Science.
The artistry of a building is what enriches the human interaction with the built environment.  While virtually everyone is adept at  critiquing, very few possess the talent and vision needed to create real art that will stand the test of time. But if even today's greatest works of architecture are to endure, they must rely on technology and building science for their substance. Modern building involves the complex coordination of material properties, structural engineering, environmental systems and construction practices. Successful direction of a team of professional consultants to realize the required union of art and science that will yield optimal performance is the essence of great design.

The professionals at Dixon know from experience that the proper balance of artistic expression and functionality requires thorough research, extensive experimentation, profound reflection, and robust discussion.

III. Success Depends upon Communication.
The client’s role is to communicate the project scope and program—or project design parameters. Our role is to help create a design response that fits within those parameters. We ensure that all members of the project team are aware of the effect design decisions will have on the end result—its architectural qualities, its performance, and its costs (both up-front costs and life-cycle costs). We know firsthand that open and consistent communication, teamwork, and mutual understanding lead to engaging and effective design outcomes.

Augmenting traditional means of communication, technology has opened the way to convey design concepts in high definition 3D, to connect with clients around the world in real-time, and to transfer documents at the touch of a button.  As leaders in architectural technology, Dixon utilizes design and construction management software developed in-house to track projects, to document construction, and to communicate openly with the host of players involved in the project definition, design, and construction process from beginning to end.
